Taxonomy

Diacodon septentrionalis was named by Russell (1929). Its type specimen is UALVP 126, a mandible (incomplete left dentary containing m3), and it is not a trace fossil. Its type locality is Cochrane 1, which is in a Ti1 terrestrial horizon in the Paskapoo Formation of Canada.

It was recombined as Propalaeosinopa septentrionalis by Fox (1990); it was recombined as Bessoecetor septentrionalis by Scott et al. (2002), Scott et al. (2013).

Synonyms

Bessoecetor thomsoni was named by Simpson (1936).

It was synonymized subjectively with Propalaeosinopa albertensis by Van Valen (1967), Dorr (1977); it was recombined as Propalaeosinopa thomsoni by Rose (1981), Winterfeld (1982), Hartman (1986); it was synonymized subjectively with Propalaeosinopa diluculi by Krause and Gingerich (1983), Cifelli et al. (1995); it was synonymized subjectively with Bessoecetor septentrionalis by Scott et al. (2002).
Palaeosinopa diluculi was named by Simpson (1935). Its type locality is Gidley Quarry, which is in a Torrejonian terrestrial horizon in the Fort Union Formation of Montana.

It was recombined as Bessoecetor diluculi by Simpson (1937); it was recombined as Propalaeosinopa diluculi by Van Valen (1967), Rigby (1980), Krause and Gingerich (1983), Cifelli et al. (1995); it was synonymized subjectively with Propalaeosinopa albertensis by Dorr (1977); it was synonymized subjectively with Bessoecetor septentrionalis by Scott et al. (2002), Scott (2003).
