Tashtykia primaeva was named by Averianov et al. (2020). Its type specimen is PIN 5087/52, a tooth (left p4), and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Berezovsk Quarry, which is in a Bathonian fluvial claystone in the Itat Formation of the Russian Federation.
