Momipites actinus was named by Nichols and Ott (1978) [Location of holotype specimen on slide is indicated following the method described by Traverse, 1958, Locating plant microfossils on mixed slides: Micropaleontology, v. 4, n. 2, p. 207-208, fig. 1
Repository for slides: Palynological slide collection of Chevron U.S.A. Inc., Central Region, Denver, Colorado.]. It is considered to be a form taxon. Its type specimen is Slide W-86-1 (9.9R, 3.8D); Plate 1, Figure 18, a microspore, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is W-86, which is in a Paleocene terrestrial siliciclastic in the Fort Union Formation of Wyoming.
