Auchenia hesterna was named by Leidy (1873).
It was recombined as Holomeniscus hesternus by Cope (1884), Cope (1893); it was recombined as Camelops hesternus by Hay (1902), Hay (1913), Elftman (1931), Webb (1965), Kurten and Anderson (1980), Honey et al. (1998), Morgan and Rinehart (2007), Baskin and Thomas (2015), Carbot-Chanona et al. (2023).
