Taxonomy
Bathyopsis middleswarti was named by Wheeler (1961). Its type locality is Sandy Creek, which is in a Bridgerian terrestrial horizon in the Bridger Formation of Wyoming.

It was synonymized subjectively with Bathyopsis fissidens by Lucas and Schoch (1998).
