Atokatheridium was named by Kielan-Jaworowska and Cifelli (2001). Its type is Atokatheridium boreni.
It was assigned to Deltatheroida by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004), Williamson et al. (2012), Bi et al. (2015); and to Deltatheridiidae by Davis and Cifelli (2011), Ni et al. (2016).
