Taxonomy
Mioclaenus ferox was named by Cope (1883). It is the type species of Claenodon.

It was recombined as Claenodon ferox by Scott (1892), Matthew (1897), Matthew (1901), Hay (1902), Gidley (1919), Hay (1930), Simpson (1935), Simpson (1937), Matthew (1937); it was recombined as Arctocyonides ferox by Van Valen (1978); it was recombined as Arctocyon ferox by Russell (1964), Schiebout (1974), Rigby (1980), Archibald et al. (1987), Williamson (1996), Kondrashov and Lucas (2004), Scott et al. (2013).

P. E. Kondrashov and S. G. Lucas 2004A species of Arctocyon that differs from A. corrugatus by its larger size (15-20 %) and from A. acrogenius by smaller size (25 %); also differs from A. corrugatus by its more robust lower jaw and shorter postorbital constriction.
