Taxonomy

Pantolestes was named by Cope (1872). Its type is Pantolestes longieundus. It is the type genus of Pantolestidae, Pantolestoidea.

It was assigned to Pantolestidae by Cope (1872), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Van Valen (1967), McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Pantolestinae by Lopatin (2006).

Synonyms

Anisacodon was named by Marsh (1872) [mistakenly "named" by Marsh 1875 as a genus of brontothere; see Anisacodon montanus].

It was considered a nomen dubium by Dorr (1977); it was synonymized subjectively with Pantolestes by Matthew (1909), Hay (1930), Van Valen (1967), Gazin (1976), Lopatin (2006).

It was assigned to Insectivora by Marsh (1872); and to Leptictidae by Hay (1902).
Passalacodon was named by Marsh (1872). Its type is Passalacodon littoralis.

It was synonymized subjectively with Pantolestes by Matthew (1909), Van Valen (1967), Lopatin (2006).

It was assigned to Leptictidae by Hay (1902).
