Alticamelus alexandrae was named by Davidson (1923).

It was recombined as Hesperocamelus alexandrae by Macdonald (1949), Macdonald (1956) and Kelly (1992); it was recombined as Aepycamelus alexandrae by Woodburne et al. (1990), Honey et al. (1998).
