Taxonomy

Lophiodon (Coryphodon) was named by Owen (1845). Its type is Coryphodon eocaenus. It is the type subgenus of Coryphodontoidea.

It was synonymized subjectively with Lophiodon by Blainville (1846); it was reranked as Coryphodon by Owen (1848), Cope (1875), Marsh (1876), Cope (1877), Cope (1882), Earle (1892), Hay (1902), Simons (1960), Lucas (1984), Carroll (1988), de Muizon and Marshall (1992), Wang (1994), Uhen and Gingerich (1995), Rose et al. (2012).

It was assigned to Lophiodon by Owen (1845); to Perissodactyla by Owen (1848); to Pantodonta by Cope (1875); and to Coryphodontidae by Marsh (1876), Cope (1877), Cope (1882), Earle (1892), Hay (1902), Simons (1960), Lucas (1984), Carroll (1988), de Muizon and Marshall (1992), Wang (1994), Uhen and Gingerich (1995), Rose et al.
