Taxonomy
Eubelodon was named by Barbour (1914) [The proposed generic name, Eubelodon, signifying well-tusked, euphonically implies relationship to Tetrabelodon and Dibelodon.]. Its type is Eubelodon morrilli.
It was synonymized subjectively with Trilophodon by Osborn (1918); it was synonymized subjectively with Gomphotherium by Tobien (1973).
It was assigned to Proboscidea by Barbour (1914); to Rhynchotheriinae by McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Gomphotheriidae by Carroll (1988), Shoshani and Tassy (1996), Lambert and Shoshani (1998) and Shoshani and Tassy (2005).
