Pleuroceros was named by Roger (1898). It is not extant. Its type is Rhinoceros pleuroceros.
It was assigned to Rhinocerotidae by Carroll (1988); to Menoceratinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989); and to Rhinocerotinae by Antoine et al. (2010).
