Mesaceratherium was named by Keissig (1969). It is not extant. Its type is Mesaceratherium gaimersheimense.
It was assigned to Rhinocerotidae by Carroll (1988); to Aceratheriinae by Prothero and Schoch (1989); and to Rhinocerotinae by Antoine et al. (2010).
