Eomoropus was named by Osborn (1913).

It was assigned to Schizotheriinae by Peterson (1919); to Eomoropinae by Colbert (1935); to Chalicotherioidea by Osborn (1913), Coombs (1998); to Eomoropidae by Holbrook (1999); and to Chalicotheriidae by Scott (1913), Prothero and Schoch (1989), Hooker and Dashzeveg (2004).
