Taxonomy
Mesonyx was named by Cope (1872). Its type is Mesonyx obtusidens. It is the type genus of Mesonychia, Mesonychidae.
It was assigned to Mesonychinae by Szalay and Gould (1966), Zhou et al. (1995); and to Mesonychidae by Cope (1875), Cope (1880), Cope (1880), Scott (1892), Hay (1902), Hay (1930), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Gingerich (1998), Archibald (1998), Thewissen et al. (2001).
