Harpagolestes was named by Wortman (1901). Its type is Harpagolestes macrocephalus.
It was assigned to Mesonychinae by Wortman (1901), Szalay and Gould (1966), Zhou et al. (1995); and to Mesonychidae by Peterson (1919), Hay (1930), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Archibald (1998), Gingerich (1998), Thewissen et al. (2001), Tomiya et al. (2021).
