Hypisodus was named by Cope (1873).

It was assigned to Leptomerycinae by Hay (1902); to Hypisodontinae by Matthew (1908), Scott (1940), Gazin (1955); to Hypertragulidae by Cope (1873), Cook (1934), Johnson (1966), Carroll (1988), Vislobokova (1998); and to Hypisodontidae by Vislobokova (2001), Korth et al. (2022).
