Taxonomy

Leptoreodon was named by Wortman (1898). Its type is Leptoreodon marshi.

It was assigned to Leptomerycinae by Hay (1902); to Hypertragulidae by Peterson (1919); to Leptotragulinae by Gazin (1955), Golz (1976); and to Protoceratidae by Wortman (1898), Carroll (1988), Prothero (1998), Prothero and Ludtke (2007).
