Palaeochoerus was named by Pomel (1847). It is not extant. It is the type genus of Palaeochoeridae.
It was synonymized subjectively with Perchoerus by Prothero (2009), Prothero (2021).
It was assigned to Palaeochoerinae by McKenna and Bell (1997), van der Made (1997); to Tayassuidae by Carroll (1988), Becker et al. (2010); and to Suoidea by Boisserie et al. (2010).
