Taxonomy
Sparassocynus derivatus was named by Reig and Simpson (1972). Its type specimen is MMP 172S, a skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Mar del Plata, which is in a Chapadmalalan terrestrial horizon in the Chapadmalal Formation of Argentina.
