Laelaps explanatus was named by Cope (1876). Its type specimen is AMNH 3958, a tooth, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Deinodon explanatus by Lambe (1902), Lambe (1905), Brown (1914), Russell (1964); it was recombined as Dryptosaurus explanatus by Hay (1902), Steel (1970); it was recombined as Dromaeosaurus explanatus by Hay (1930), Kuhn (1939); it was considered a nomen dubium by Makovicky and Norell (2004).
