Taxonomy
Elphidotarsius was named by Gidley (1923). It is not extant. Its type is Elphidotarsius florencae. It was considered paraphyletic by Beard and Wang (1995).

It was assigned to Carpolestidae by Gidley (1923), Simpson (1937), Simpson (1940), Gunnell (1989) and McKenna and Bell (1997); and to Carpolestinae by Beard and Wang (1995) and Beard et al. (2016).
