Pecten stearnsii was named by Dall (1878). Its type specimen is USNM 7942, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was recombined as Pecten (Pecten) stearnsii by Arnold (1903), Arnold (1906) and Jordan and Hertlein (1926); it was recombined as Pecten (Janira) stearnsii by Grant and IV and Gale (1931); it was corrected as Pecten stearnsi by Woodring et al. (1946); it was recombined as Pecten (Flabellipecten) stearnsii by Hertlein and Grant (1972); it was recombined as Flabellipecten stearnsii by Moore (1984) and Hall (2002); it was recombined as Chlamys stearnsi by Muhs et al. (2002); it was recombined as Leopecten stearnsii by Hendy (2020).
