Bumbanius was named by Russell and Dashzeveg (1986). It is not extant. Its type is Bumbanius rarus.
It was assigned to Nyctitheriidae by Carroll (1988); to Asionyctiinae by Missiaen and Smith (2005); and to Praolestinae by Lopatin (2006).
