Limnoecus was named by Stirton (1930). It is not extant. Its type is Limnoecus tricuspis.

It was assigned to Soricidae by Stirton (1930), Carroll (1988); and to Limnoecinae by Van Valen (1967), Gunnell et al. (2008).
