Rostellaria (Rimella) canalifera was named by Gabb (1864).

It was recombined as Rostellaria canalifer by Gabb (1864); it was recombined as Rimella canalifera by Weaver (1912), Waring (1917); it was recombined as Ectinochilus (Cowlitzia) canalifer by Stewart (1927); it was recombined as Ectinochilus (Cowlitzia) canalifera by Squires and Demetrion (1992); it was synonymized subjectively with Rimella supraplicata by Squires (2013).
