Taxonomy

Triconodon was named by Owen (1859). Its type is Triconodon mordax. It is the type genus of Triconodontidae, Triconodontinae.

It was assigned to Marsupialia by Owen (1859); to Marsupialia by Owen (1871); to Pantotheria by Marsh (1880); to Triconodonta by Simpson (1925); to Triconodontinae by Hay (1902), Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929), Hay (1930), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004); and to Triconodontidae by Marsh (1887), Lydekker (1894), Simpson (1925), Jenkins and Crompton (1979), Rasmussen and Callison (1981), Carroll (1988), Rougier et al. (1996), Cifelli et al. (1998), Gao et al. (2010), Allain et al. (2022).
