Amphilestinae was named by Osborn (1888). It is not extant. It was considered unknown by Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004), monophyletic by Averianov et al. (2005).
It was reranked as the family Amphilestidae by Jenkins and Crompton (1979), Carroll (1988), Zhou et al. (1991), Engelmann and Callison (1998), Kielan-Jaworowska et al. (2004), Averianov et al. (2005), Gao et al. (2010), Butler and Sigogneau-Russel (2016).
It was assigned to Triconodontidae by Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929), Hay (1930); to Triconodonta by Jenkins and Crompton (1979), Carroll (1988), Zhou et al. (1991), Engelmann and Callison (1998); to Eutriconodonta by Averianov et al. (2005); to Theriamorpha by Gao et al. (2010); and to Eutriconodonta by Kielan-Jaworowska et al.
