Taxonomy
Balanocidaris japonica was named by Nisiyama (1966). Its type specimen is IGPS 73767 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Shohoji temple, which is in a Jurassic marine limestone in the Torinosu Limestone Formation of Japan.
