Edentosuchus was named by Young (1973).

It was assigned to Edentosuchidae by Young (1973), Li (1985), Carroll (1988); to Crocodyliformes by Nascimento and Zaher (2011); to Protosuchia by Fiorelli and Calvo (2008), Bronzati et al. (2012); and to Protosuchidae by Pol et al. (2004), Buscalioni (2017), Martínez et al. (2018).
