Lysis mickeyi was named by Saul and Squires (2008). Its type specimen is LACMIP 13374 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is LACMIP loc. 10757, Bear Creek, which is in a Coniacian shoreface sandstone in the Redding Formation of California.
