Erpetosuchidae was named by Watson (1917). It is not extant. Its type is Erpetosuchus.
It was assigned to Procrocodilia by Nopcsa (1928); to Pseudosuchia by Kuhn (1946); to Ornithosuchoidea by Kuhn (1964); to Chirotherioidea by Kuhn (1966); to Thecodontia by Watson (1917), Carroll (1988); to Archosauria by Nesbitt and Butler (2012); and to Pseudosuchia by Lacerda et al. (2018).
