Taxonomy

Protorosaurus was named by Meyer (1830) [in Lorenz Oken's journal "Isis"]. It is the type genus of Protorosauridae.

It was assigned to Dactylopodes by Meyer (1845); to Sauria by Geinitz (1848); to Lacertinidae by d'Orbigny (1849); to Saurii by Roemer (1856); to Thecodontia by Owen (1859), Owen (1860), Owen (1861); to Rhynchocephalia by Cope (1870); to Dinosauria by Seeley (1880); to Dinosauria by Baur (1887); to Protorosauria by Seeley (1887); to Protorosauridae by Cope (1871), Cope (1875), Osborn (1903), Kuhn (1966), Chatterjee (1980), Benton (1985), Chatterjee (1986), Carroll (1988); and to Archosauromorpha by Gottman-Quesada and Sander (2009), Ezcurra (2016).
