Protochelydra was named by Erickson (1973). It is not extant. Its type is Protochelydra zangerli.
It was assigned to Durocryptodira by Danilov and Parham (2008); to Protochelydrinae by Hutchison and Pasch (2004), Hutchison (2008); to Testudines by Anquetin et al. (2009); to Chelydridae by Carroll (1988), Hutchison (1992), Holroyd et al. (2001), Holroyd and Hutchison (2002), Brinkman (2013); and to Panchelydridae by Joyce (2016).
