Caeciliidae was named by Frank and Ramus (1996). It is extant. Its type is Caecilia.

It was assigned to Gymnophidia by Cope (1875); to Gymnophiona by Estes and Wake (1972), Estes (1981), Carroll (1988), Frank and Ramus (1996); and to Apoda by Maddin et al. (2012).
