Kawanectes lafquenianum
Taxonomy
Trinacromerum lafquenianum was named by Gasparini and Goni (1985). Its type specimen is MLP 71-II-13-1, a set of postcrania, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Quarry of the “Bentonitas Patagónicas” company, which is in a Campanian/Maastrichtian marginal marine claystone/siltstone in the Allen Formation of Argentina.
It was considered a nomen dubium by Gasparini and Salgado (1999); it was recombined as Kawanectes lafquenianum by O'Gorman (2016), O'Gorman (2016), O'Gorman et al. (2019), O'Gorman (2019), O'Gorman (2020), O'Gorman (2021).

O'Gorman 2020 | Small-bodied elasmosaurid (approximately 3.8 m in maximum length) differring from other elasmosaurid taxa based on the following state combination: coronoid process triangular in shape with a high and pointed dorsal extremity; short symphysis incorporating 2.5 alveolar spaces; cervical centra longer than high with a prominent lateral keel; laterally projecting parapophyses on the caudal vertebrae developed into a conspicuous knob; pelvic bar present; ilium with slightly expanded and laterally compressed distal end; ilium with v-shaped sacral facet restricted to the medial face of the expanded distal extremity and delimited ventrally by a medial knob; humerus with large posterodistal projection supporting an articular facet for a proximal supernumerary ossification; distinct depression present anterior to the main muscle scar on ventral surface of the humerus; humerus/femur length ratio (1.2); femur with a strongly convex capitulum. |
