Brachyops was named by Owen (1855). Its type is Brachyops laticeps. It is the type genus of Brachyopidae, Brachyopoidea.

It was assigned to Brachyopidae by Broom (1915), Watson (1919), Howie (1972), Carroll (1988), Warren and Marsicano (2000).
