Trematosuchus was named by Watson (1919). It is not extant. Its type is Trematosaurus sobeyi.
It was assigned to Trematosaurinae by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Trematosauridae by Watson (1919), Haughton (1925), Warren and Black (1985), Carroll (1988), Damiani and Rubidge (2003).
