Taxonomy
Platystega was named by Wiman (1914). It is not extant. Its type is Platystega depressa. It is the type genus of Platystegidae.
It was assigned to Lyrocephalinae by Säve-Söderbergh (1935); to Trematosauridae by Watson (1919), Warren and Black (1985), Carroll (1988); and to Platystegidae by Schoch and Milner (2000).
