Rewana was named by Howie (1972). Its type is Rewana quadricuneata.
It was assigned to Temnospondyli by Howie (1972); to Indobrachyopidae by Cosgriff and Zawiskie (1979), Carroll (1988); to Derwentiidae by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Rhytidosteidae by Warren and Black (1985), Marsicano and Warren (1998), Poropat et al. (2023).
