Rhytidosteus was named by Owen (1884). It is not extant. Its type is Rhytidosteus capensis.
It was assigned to Trematosauroidea by Warren and Black (1985); to Rhytidosteinae by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Rhytidosteidae by Haughton (1925), Cosgriff and Zawiskie (1979), Carroll (1988), Marsicano and Warren (1998), Damiani and Rubidge (2003).
