Deltasaurus was named by Cosgriff (1965). Its type is Deltasaurus kimberleyensis.
It was assigned to Peltosteginae by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Rhytidosteidae by Cosgriff (1965), Cosgriff (1974), Cosgriff and Zawiskie (1979), Warren and Black (1985), Carroll (1988), Marsicano and Warren (1998), Poropat et al. (2023).
