Rhytidosteidae was named by Huene (1920). It is not extant. It is the type family of Rhytidosteoidea.
It was assigned to Stereospondyli by Haughton (1925); to Trematosauroidea by Warren and Black (1985); to Temnospondyli by Marsicano and Warren (1998); to Trematosauria by Yates and Warren (2000); to Rhytidosteoidea by Cosgriff (1965), Cosgriff and Zawiskie (1979), Carroll (1988), Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Stereospondyli by Damiani and Rubidge (2003).
