Sclerothoracidae was named by Huene (1932). It is not extant. Its type is Sclerothorax. It was considered monophyletic by Schoch and Milner (2000), Schoch et al. (2007).
It was assigned to Capitosauroidea by Kuhn (1971); to Rhinesuchoidea by Carroll (1988); to Stereospondyli by Schoch and Milner (2000); and to Capitosauria by Schoch et al. (2007).
