It was assigned to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Mysticeti by Uhen et al. (2008); to Balaenopteroidea by Marx and Fordyce (2015); and to Cetotheriidae by Kellogg (1931), Simpson (1945), Barnes (1977), Carroll (1988), McKenna and Bell (1997), Whitmore and Barnes (2008), Berta (2017).
