Notiocetus was named by Ameghino (1891) [Sepkoski's age data: T Plio-l]. Its type is Notiocetus platensis.
It was assigned to Balaeninae by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904); to Balaenidae by Ameghino (1891), Palmer (1904), Kellogg (1928); to Balaenopterinae by McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Balaenopteridae by Simpson (1945), Gondar (1966), Carroll (1988), Cozzuol (1996), Berta (2017).
