Microphocaena was named by Kudrin and Tatarinov (1966) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is not extant. It was considered monophyletic by Berta (2017).
It was assigned to Phocaenidae by Kudrin and Tatarinov (1966); to Phocoeninae by de Muizon (1988); to Kentriodontinae by Barnes (1978), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); and to Kentriodontidae by Barnes (1985), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993), Ichishima et al. (1995), Berta (2017).
