Mesocetus was named by Van Beneden (1880) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-m T Mi-u]. Its type is Mesocetus longirostris.
It was synonymized subjectively with Plesiocetus by True (1912); it was considered a nomen dubium by Bouetel and Muizon (2006); it was considered a nomen dubium by Steeman (2010).
It was assigned to Balaenopterinae by Trouessart (1898), Trouessart (1904); to Balaenidae by Hay (1902), Palmer (1904); to Balaenopteridae by Gorjanovic-Kramberger (1892), Zittel (1925), Pia (1937); to Cetotheriidae by Kellogg (1928), Hay (1930), Kellogg (1944), Simpson (1945), Sherman (1952), Pilleri (1987), Carroll (1988), Paunovic (1993), Gottfried et al.
