Macrodelphinus was named by Wilson (1935) [Sepkoski's age data: T Mi-l]. It was considered monophyletic by Uhen et al. (2008), Lambert et al. (2015).
It was assigned to Delphinidae by Wilson (1935), Mitchell and Tedford (1973); to Eurhinodelphidae by Barnes (1977), Muizon (1990); to Rhabdosteidae by Myrick (1979), Carroll (1988), Benton (1993), McKenna and Bell (1997); to Cetacea by Sepkoski (2002); to Eurhinodelphinidae by Fordyce and de Muizon (2001), Uhen et al. (2008); and to Odontoceti by Lambert et al. (2015).
