Taxonomy
Makaira panamensis was named by Fierstine (1978). Its type specimen is USNM 181710, a partial skull, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Makaira type locality, which is in a Miocene marine horizon in the Chagres Sandstone Formation of Panama.
